People In Music History
Monteverdi, Claudio (1567-1643) Italian composer, notable in the history of
opera, harmony, and orchestration. Choirboy at his birthplace. Cremona:
afterward held various state and church musical positions in Mantua and
elsewhere -- finally in Venice, where he died. Became a priest, 1632. His
operas (usually considered history's first major operas) include Orpheus, The
Combat of Tancred and Clorinda, The Return of Ulysses to his Country, and (when
he was 75) The Coronation of Poppaea, known in various modern editions. Some
other operas are lost. Wrote also more than 250 madrigals (some with
independent instrumental parts; See Madrigal), including a few madrigali
sprituali (to religious words); masses, 2 settings of the Magnificat, and other
vocal works with varying accompaniment -- and often with "daringly" expressive
harmony. Wrote no purely instrumental works.
